Department of Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the branch of medicine and biology concerned with the study of drug action. Its main focus is understanding how drugs interact with living systems to produce therapeutic effects or adverse reactions.

Mission of Pharmacology:

The mission of pharmacology is to understand the interaction between drugs and living organisms, developing safe and effective therapeutic agents. This includes the study of drug mechanisms, pharmacokinetics (how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and excretes drugs), pharmacodynamics (how drugs affect the body), and the prevention of drug-related problems, such as toxicity and adverse reactions.

Vision of Pharmacology:

The vision of pharmacology is to advance global health by creating a deeper understanding of drug actions and enabling the development of innovative therapies. Pharmacologists aim to optimize drug therapies, reduce side effects, and contribute to public health by discovering new medications, improving existing treatments, and personalizing medicine based on genetic and molecular profiles.

Objectives of Pharmacology:

1. Drug Discovery and Development: To identify and develop new drugs that can improve patient outcomes for various diseases.

2. Understanding Drug Mechanisms: To understand how drugs exert their effects at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels.

3. Improvement of Drug Safety: To identify and mitigate adverse drug reactions, ensuring that drugs are safe for use.

4. Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics: To study how the body processes drugs and how drugs affect the body to optimize drug dosages and regimens.

5. Personalized Medicine: To tailor drug treatments based on individual genetic profiles, ensuring the most effective therapy with the least side effects.

6. Public Health Impact: To reduce the global burden of disease through drug intervention and to inform public health policies related to drug use.

7. Educational Contribution: To train new pharmacologists and educate healthcare professionals about drug therapies and their effects.

These aspects of pharmacology work together to improve therapeutic practices, minimize harm from drugs, and enhance patient care through evidence-based strategies.
